Neighborhood Faces

February 7, 2020

When I’m out and about, I’m constantly drawing people and faces. Not actually on paper or a device, but in my head, in my imagination.

Sometimes nature makes faces for me ~ like this hardware on a fence.

Here are some more wonderful faces I found around the neighborhood. . .

The Best Things Come In Small Packages

December 24, 2019

The best gifts are the very simple ones.

The gift of a quiet, peaceful, calm day.
Taking time out for a long overdue rambling phone call with a dear friend.
Walking on the Southern California beaches in winter.
Snuggling with my husband, whiling away the afternoon.
Sending Secret Santa gifts to people I don’t know, and aren’t expecting anything.

I’m so grateful for the abundance of gifts in my life.
(Although, sometimes The Universe sends me a present that is quite a challenge to unwrap!?) ;-}

Here’s wishing that Santa brings your best gift in a small package this year.
Merry Christmas!

The Sun Always Manages To Get Through

November 27, 2019

However you are spending this Thanksgiving holiday, whether it’s all good, or there’s some misfortune thrown in, find the gratitude in your heart — somewhere, somehow — and let it spread all through you, until there is no room for anything else.
Ok, except pecan pie. It would be unfortunate to not save room for that. ;-)

Happy Thanksgiving.

This Too Shall Pass

November 21, 2019

Packing up, moving — not just a house, but a lifetime.
I don’t know how I did it.

I got up at 4 am, sometimes cheated and got up at 3:30. Sometimes really cheating bad and not exercising. It was insane, and I knew it even as I did it. I didn’t think about it — the why, the logistics, the emotional toll. I just did what had to be done for that day.

Dogged perseverance.

Where Do I Start?

November 5, 2019

I haven’t had a studio since May 2019. That’s when I did my last blog post.

I’m not a digital artist (yet), so I’m still working woefully analog. I draw on paper, scan the image, resize it for web display, then upload it to my blog. I need art supplies, a light box, scanner, and computer. And all those were packed in May. And then we moved in July.

I unpacked those basic supplies first thing in my new home with every intention of being able to at least Do Something! But…as hard as I tried…I just…it didn’t…things happened.
{..all the reasons, explanations, excuses, whining, complaining, crying…as to why…go here..}

Now, in the beginning of November, I have a rudimentary studio set up in my new home.
I have so many scribbles, sketches, ideas, notes for resuming my blog. Where do I start??

Where Have You Been?

November 5, 2019

Come, sit down, and have a cup of tea.
It’s been such a long time.
Stay a while and tell me all about it.
Tell me what you have been doing ~ where have you been??

I’ve missed you.

Mother's Day

May 12, 2019

My mother works full-time assisting teachers at a preschool. As she gets to know the very young children just starting out in life, she says to herself, “What will this boy, this girl do with those little hands?” Children’s curious hands are busy exploring, touching, learning – testing life out. When those hands become adult size, what will they be doing?

My mom tells me how she used to hold my tiny hands and look at me and say, “What are you going to make with your hands?”

Bridal Shower

April 28, 2019

When I sent an RSVP to a bridal shower a while back, little did I know that my life would be in turmoil on Saturday, April 27. As the day got closer, I felt a little panicky about losing a day’s work. But I woke up at 3:30 AM and got enough work done to leave it without any worry or guilt.

It was a very girly day and a welcome change after weeks of being a slob slogging through the house remodeling project. I was not very well put together. My hands are a disaster – rough, chapped, and scraped up. I look tired and haggard, and I swear I’ve aged exponentially in the last few months.

Immediately upon arriving at the party, I was out of my head, away from my misery, and immersed in all things beautiful and happy. The bride was beautiful, absolutely radiant with happiness. It was truly uplifting to experience all the creative ways this diverse and fun group of women feted the bride and lavished her with love and good wishes.

Easter Chocolate

April 21, 2019

One of my favorite traditions from childhood is having gobs of chocolate on Easter. I know the holiday has much more significance than brightly colored eggs and chocolate bunnies in an Easter basket, but I’m just being honest here. I could blame my mom?

I'm So Much Older At Night

March 25, 2019

I’ve been up since 4:00 a.m. It’s so darn early, and still dark! I’m trying to maintain as much of my exercise and yoga routine as I can…but I need as many daylight hours as possible to work on our house renovations.

During the day, I’m wall-to-wall busy with house stuff, so I’m working at night on my computer (tedious) and my art (fun). It’s quiet now and I can concentrate. But I’m a morning person. Working at night is tough for me.
